Commentary

Over the course of a dinner Linda and I had with our son, Steve, and his then fiancée, Mandi, shortly after their engagement, Linda asked each of them what I thought was a very interesting question:  “When was it that you first knew that you had found ‘the one?’”

It was months after that restaurant conversation that I wrote this song, based on my recollection of the answers each had given.  We were staying (for a very relaxed, if hot, August week) at a house we rented near the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, the wedding site.  Everybody was terrifically supportive and happy for our extraordinary, well-matched pair.  I had been playing with guitar chord progressions, and the words and tune, including the lifting bridge sequence, came to me in Ojai just before the wedding.  I sang it to Steve on the morning of his wedding, later sharing it with Mandi.

Not included on the CD but sung for Steve and Mandi at the rehearsal dinner was another song for them, “Coffee Meets Bagel”--see PDF below.  (They met on-line through a website or app so named.)  Thanks to groomsmen Brook and Conor for leading the chorus echo, and to Fred for capturing and posting this portion of the event.  The wedding was lovely.  And the marriage is going great for this extraordinary couple, who share a birthday and so much more.

Lyrics

He told his friend how it was with her
He told his friend how it was.
And as he spoke he listened to himself
And he knew she was the one.

“I’m OK,” she said. I will be alright.
I don’t need a thing.
He listened well, came and cared for her,
Her heart opened to him.
Her heart opened to him.

And here we are in Ojai
Friends and family gathered to
Witness our gal and her guy
Exchange vows and say, “I do.”

He told his friend how it was with her
He told his friend how it was.
And as he spoke he listened to himself
And he knew she was the one.
He knew she was the one.
